  • Re: HDView black circles at zenith & nadir

Excellent! What do I have to do to use the new version on my existing HDView panoramas?

Ah yes! Very good! Clicking the link you provided with my browser (Firefox 3.5) showed no change (still v3) and no prompt for upgrade. Opening the link in IE prompted me for the upgrade. Now I have v3.3 and the problem is fixed (both in IE and in Firefox). Thank you very much.

Then the solution is to generate two extra tiles for zenith and nadir, saved with the set. A tiny bit of extra work for ICE, and a lot of effort spared for HDView. And a visually pleasing result.

  • Re: Cannot specify rectilinear mapping

I understand, and I'll adjust my expectations and workflow accordingly. There are two things that ICE does far, far better than any other stitching program out there: 1) it has a wonderfully intuitive and responsive way of interactively setting the horizon to ensure straight horizontals and verticals, and 2) it is insanely fast at blending very large images, along with a surprisingly tiny memory footprint. Blends that bog down with 2GB of RAM on other packages sail through with 200MB on ICE.

  • HDView black circles at zenith & nadir

Although ICE will generate a full 360 x 180 degree image when exporting to a JPEG or TIFF, exporting to HDView inserts black circles at zenith and nadir (straight up and straight down). The full info is there to fill in the circles and yet HDView draws a blank. Below is a polar projection (using Photoshop) of an ICE spherical mapping. Note the seamless join around the zenith, at the fluorescent fixture and ceiling tile. You can see the HDView result here . Drag up / down to see the black circles

  • Source image dropped in hi-res, included in lo-res

On a 360-degree composite of my office, ICE will do an excellent job stitching the full-resolution images, but will inexplicably leave out one of the source images. This is the resulting image: Note the missing section (black bar) in the middle. If I reduce the resolution of the source images from 3072 px wide to 1024 px, the stitching is atrocious but at least all the source images are included. This is the resulting image: If you copy both results to your local drive and use a viewer to flip back

  • Cannot specify rectilinear mapping

I tried to put together a composite of my basement stairs. In this case ICE will only allow spherical or cylindrical mapping and the best it'll do is this: What I really want is rectilinear. PanoTools gives me the following image: Personal opinions of aesthetics aside, as far as I'm concerned it's a severe limitation that although ICE can calculate the rectilinear version (it will show a preview), it won't generate the final result at all. It's a pity, because I find ICE very
