Songsmith does detect the key you're singing in, but it is music after all, so it won't be perfect 100% of the time. In fact sometimes even musically experienced listeners can argue about what key a melody was in, even for a great singer. If you think Songsmith didn't get the right key (this shouldn't happen too often), we suggest that you just give it another shot., just by singing the same thing again. Also sometimes instead of starting over from scratch it can be very helpful to

Upgrading to version 1.02 won't affect the additional styles you've downloaded; they'll still be there. You also shouldn't have to re-enter your license key when you upgrade (it's stored on your computer), but if you do need to retrieve your license key at some point, you'll have to contact the Microsoft Store: http://store.microsoft.com/Help/Contact-Us Hope that helps... have fun! -Dan from the Songsmith Team

Re: sound recorder: All consumer versions of Windows come with Sound Recorder. So if you have XP, Vista, or Windows 7, you should have Sound Recorder. To start it under Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should be able to press the start button (at the lower-left-hand corner of the screen), and just type "sound recorder" into the search box that comes up. Under Windows XP, go to "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder". -- Re: microphones

Regarding (1)... can you think of any other configuration changes (hardware or software) that happened on your computer recently that might have caused this sudden change in behavior? Are you experiencing unexpected behavior in any other software as well, or just Songsmith? If the problem continues, the first thing I'd try is removing and reinstalling Songsmith, which brings us to... Regarding (2)... the most recent Songsmith update (version 1.02) will work fine with your existing license key

We are taking this issue offline with the poster and will re-post to this thread if we come across a solution. It appears that somehow one of the files that Songsmith uses to store configuration information became corrupted on this user's computer (hence the error "could not find any recognizable digits"). If anyone else is observing this problem as well, please let us know, otherwise we'll post back here if we find a solution. Thanks! -Dan from the Songsmith Team

Sorry that Songsmith isn't working properly for you. It sounds like you might be having the problem described here: http://community.research.microsoft.com/forums/p/3098/5084.aspx#5084 ...where another software package has played around with one of the Windows services (WMI). That link contains instructions on how to get WMI back in shape. Can you let us know if that helps? -The Songsmith Team

Sorry that Songsmith isn't working for you. Can you confirm that you have a microphone - either internal or external - installed on your computer? If you do have a microphone, can you try recording something in the "sound recorder" application that comes with Windows? This will help us understand whether the problem is specifically related to Songsmith. -Dan from the Songsmith Team

Due to great response from the education community, Songsmith is now available to institutions that subscribe to MSDNAA (Microsoft Development Network Academic Alliance). This includes many university departments and high schools... check with your program to see if you're a subscriber! We hope Songsmith becomes a useful resource for teachers who are introducing their students to music theory, chords, and songwriting. Songsmith can be a great starting point for all of these things, and we hope

Unfortunately, Songsmith is only available for purchase in the U.S. and E.U. right now. We're working on changing this, but there are financial issues involved that are bigger than Songsmith, so it takes some time. Hopefully you can enjoy the trial version for now... sorry I don't have better news. -Dan from the Songsmith Team

Sorry to hear the instructions weren't clear; hopefully we can get this worked out. When you an purchase instrument pack from Garritan, you should be able to download a setup program. When you run the setup program, the instruments it contains should immediately appear in Songsmith, in the "set up your band" window (click the "mixer" button at the lower-right corner of the main window). Did you try that? That should be all there is to it... If you don't see new instruments
