I've amended my internet options to those recommended in in Resolution 1 but still get the same "does not detect an internet connection" message.

I have similar symptoms to those described by Robin. With the proxy settings set (and all options described in earlier posts tried), WWT fails to connect. However, selecting 'Product support', opens a 'Web window' without any further prompting, and opens the usual support page from http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/help/FileABug.aspx.

Does this give any other pointers as to a fix for the issue?

I've read all the post regarding the problem and there seems to be no resolve.  I have Win XP Pro SP3 and all my internet programs are successful connecting to the internet except this one.  I have no proxy server, My WINS Proxy is disbled, I connect to the internet using a DYNEX Router w/NAT which is connected to a Wireless hub to ClearWire my ISP.

Why do I need a proxy for the software to connect to the internet anyway and why is it not successfully using IE7 settings successfully?  I do have OneCare installl, but I have added an exception for this software to connect.

Bump bump.

Come on Redmond Research/Microsoft Research: this proxy issue really needs a solution and its been nearly a fortnight now. I work in a school and we're dieing to use the software but can't. I've promised this great new experience, based on using it at home, and have to keep making excuses. I would imagine practically every school in the world requires kids to log on before accessing the internet, so its hardly an unusual problem.

Hi rdk,

Thranx came up with this workaround that has at least worked for one other person. http://community.research.microsoft.com/forums/p/1057/1589.aspx#1589

I am also sending you a private message.

Thanks for that link Chuck. The workaround works for me. I recommend everyone give it a go.

I have given this a try and still no luck, thanks for the suggestion. Hope springs eternal, perhaps the next fix will do it. Cheers.

Sighh.... Same here. Proxomitron doesn't fix the problem for me. It installed fine and tested fine but as soon as I changed the proxy settings in IE to proxomitron, the proxomitron log file ran up a long list of errors and naturally trying to get onto the web with IE failed. Oh, and WWT still said "no internet connection". Seamonkey, which uses it's own proxy settings and not IE's was happily surfing the web whilst WWT said there was no internet connection. (I'm running behind a corp proxy).

A week or two ago one of the MS guys (I think) said the facility of putting the proxy authentication into the config file would be a security hazard and so not something they'd consider. But the proxy authentication details are scattered throughout the pc (and are usually the same as those used to log onto the pc), so surely that security concern is a matter of trying to shut the barn door after the horse has long since bolted?

More details, including the proxomitron log file, in the other forum on this ...

Sighh...... One day ....

cheers,

Dave

I followed the instructions very carefully, and I am not behind a proxy, just behind a router, but even without the router connected, I still get the cannot connect problem. I've been getting it for weeks, and I have tried just about everything to get it to work. Please help, I would love to use this program.

Still no connection here. This kind of reminds me of when in the early NASA days when they had a new roket to launch and got everybody excited to see it launch, and it blows up on the pad.  I would hope Microsoft could get this problem solved and not just let us see this program blow up on the pad.

Well, I've tried all the fixes and workarounds put forward, and it still comes up with the no connection detected poo.

Is it a fault in the programming? Why can't it just use a normal internet protocol like the rest? Sorry for making this seem simplistic, but I've dozens of programs which can access the internet, why can't this one? Is it in some way different than the others?

Hi PiAnt,

Have you tried this workaround?: http://community.research.microsoft.com/forums/p/1057/1589.aspx#1589

Gee, I know it's a beta, but come on . . .

I've tried everything suggested!

Can't ya just write a little program thingy that fixes this problem?

Hi Chuck,

I've downloaded Promoxitron and got it running, but I'm not sure where to find the corporate proxy number I need to enter.

I'm a home user with a single ADSL connection to an ISP. I've found their Proxy name and the port is 8080 which I've entered into the appropriate boxes, but it still doesn't work. I've tried adding it to the firewall exceptions and opening the port etc, but all to no avail.

I'd much prefer to stay with the setup I've got now rather than fanny with another program mate, as everything else works fine.

What's most niggling though is a mate who keeps telling me how amazing this program is.

(Though his eyesight's atrocious. I reckon he can't connect either.)

Hi,

this is an issue for me, I can not let IE use auto detect for the network, this is on a corporat network, where we use an "automatic configuration script" see below:
network screen shot

I have run the most recent hotfix install, but it doesn't allow for this, any ideas?

thanks,
Chris
