Customizing Zentity GUI

First congratulations on a first class job with the extensive class libraries with this project. While I would encourage you to put all the source code on Codeplex at the earliest opportunity that's not the most pressing issue at the moment.

I would like to be able to customise the existing WebGUI for Zentity. To make this a whole lot easier I would appreciate being able to download the original Visual Studio project/solution files as I have tried unsucessfully to fully reverse engineer the correct folder structure of the existing deployed site as a Visual Studio project. I am sure this will help spread adoption.

Secondly if I radically reengineer the WebGUI, what obligations might I have to identity that it is Zentity working behind the scenes. Is there any notion of a "powered by Zentity" logo or any need for branding of a site to acknowledge that it is based on the Zentity Engine.?

Feedback on installing beta 2

Hello,

First off, great product and thank you so much for putting it out to the community for feedback. I am very excited about this movement from within MS Research :)

I had some difficulties getting beta 2 installed on my system. I am running Vista Home Premium and already had .Net 3.5 update along with SQL 2005 and VS 2008 express. I used the MS web update tool and installed pretty much every thing in it.

Straight away I had errors. I found out (after many hours) that SQL 2005 management tools do not co-exist with SQL 2008 managment tools and 2005 Management had to go. Okay, got it. Then VS 2008 had to be updated to SP1. Okay did that.

Finally everything installed and I was able to install beta 2.

I visited http://localhost:9090/Default.aspx (according to the insall guide) and nothing showed up. Had to go to http://localhost:9090/WebUI/Default.aspx. I only found that out by going to IIS 7. So now I am on the correct page and I just get a header whilst being re-routed to the erorr page, but no error is displayed.

So I had a hunch and checked SQL 2008 permissions and there are no permisisons to the NetworkService (the .Net account) to access the created databases. So I added the account and was finally able to access the WebUI/Default.aspx page.

When I went to add a scholarly work I got screen below with nothing in the main column being clickable.

I was able to Add Tags, Contacts, Person & Contacts though.

Search did not work for Tags.

I am continuing work on this so I will submit things as I go.

We are extremely pleased to announce public release of Zentity V 1.0 !!!

"Zentity" (official name for Research Output Repository Platform) is a semantic store (based on SQL Server 2008 and the Entity-Framework), and includes a ScholarlyWorks application designed to support the current wave of academic digital library and repository projects (e.g. to store people, papers, lectures, people, books, chapters, videos, etc. and a relationships like IsAuthorOf, Presented, Cites, IsCitedBy, etc.).

High level repository features includes:

Just looking at the new Microsoft Repository, and I was intrigued to find this data type. In fact, it knocked me sideways because I had only been discussing it with a number of different people over the last while. This has two properties 'DataAvailableFrom' and 'DataAvailableTo', which means we can make the item available for a discreet period of time, in line with typical copyright licensing agreements. The problem that I have been pondering is 'could we use a repository to manage copyright licence restricted material for our students?' I think you guys have really been wearing your thinking caps. Could this do what we need? Very Interesting.

How to avoid common installation mistakes

Vista comes with UAC and “Research output repository platform” installer may show error prompts during the installation such as,
*Cannot connect to Internet Information Server.(-2147221164)
*Failed to read IIsWebs table.(-2147024891)

Few Tips to avoid these error messages,

*Launch “Setup.exe” with admin privilege
-Right click “Setup.exe”, select option “Run as administrator”
-Current installer does not elevate user rights automatically, so this explicit action is required from user side

*Make sure that user has administrative privileges on the machine on which installer needs to run
-Add user to “Administrator” group
-User should have access to “%SystemDrive%\Inetpub” folder as installer creates default web application at this location

*Check that all IIS features are installed
-Default ASP.Net web application uses few IIS features, which does not get installed as part of the default IIS installation

*Enter correct IIS authentication details during installer screen
-Enter information in the correct format as, Domain\Username

Please make sure that user follows the above guidelines to avoid installer issues.

Tips to setup correct environment to run repository platform

The “Research Output Repository Platform” has been built using latest .Net Framework 3.5 and SQL Server/ Express 2008. Also, the installer sets up default ASP.Net web application which requires correct IIS configurations.

So, it is required to setup correct environment to run the platform successfully.

User can use the simplified Microsoft Web Platform Installer to setup machine before proceeding with repository platform installer from, http://www.microsoft.com/web/channel/products/WebPlatformInstaller.aspx(Make sure to select all IIS options under ‘application development’ section) Once user sets up the environment successfully, one can proceed with Repository platform installer.

Come participate in the JISC Developer Happiness Days at Birkbeck, University of London, and join us on Friday, February 13^th for a half-day exploration of the MSR Research Output Repository Platform (codename “Famulus”). Alex Wade and Savas Parastatidis from Microsoft External Research will be there to keep the happiness flowing and will combine a few short demos with lots of hands-on labs and interactive sessions. We will show off some of the great new features coming in Beta 2 (RDFs support, data model extensibility, semantic-store integrated authorization, etc.) and will share lots of code samples (e.g. simple inferencing). Am I fulfilling my pre-requisites for installation

Hi, I have set up the server as follows:

Windows Server Web Copyright 2007 Microsoft Corporation

Intel Xeon E5410 @ 2.33GHz 4GB RAM Service Pack 1

With,

Microsoft SQL Sever Express 2008.

I am using Windows Authentication on my instance of SQL Server. The user in this case is an Administrator. It is also the same user that I am when I install the Research Platform.

My problem is that I get the message 'Please ensure that the SQL Server Instance exists and that you have access to it'. I have gone through the steps up to 6c, on the Beta installation instructions and can see no way to proceed.

Can anyone help?

Setup

Hi,

just one quick suggestion: Right now setup (i.e. putting binary bits on the computer) and configuration (i.e. setting up the database, IIS web site etc) are all part of the setup package. I think most server products from MS moved away from that model to a two step process: have the setup ONLY lay down the bits on disc, and then have a seperate configuration utility that does SQL database creation, IIS Website creation and whatever else is needed (i.e. see the new TFS 2010 setup experience, where they discuss this). In my own experience this also makes for much, much easier maintenance down the road, in particular updates will be much easier. MSI is fine for deploying updates to the bits, but when you have your configuration steps in the MSI as well, you are up for major, major difficulties that are really not needed.
