The editor does a great job of stiching but doesn't crop the left and right edges to create a true 360 panorama. Is there anyway to do this so the image can be used to display a cylindrical panorama

Hi,

I achieved to create a lot of impressing panoramas using ICE.

There just one detail that I miss: a way to straiten the horizont in cases that I merge a couple of images. In this case often the horizont is a long "wave".

The ideal solution would be to extend the projection / curvature tool not only to apply moves and turns but also "waves" for suppression of the described problem.

Hi:

I've used ICE for quite a while now.

Today, for the first time, ICE failed, with this error message:

Microsoft ICE was unable to Stich together any of the given source images

Unspecified error (0x 80004005)

What has changed? I have moved from Window 7 64-bit RC to the production version.

To be clear, I used three photos that have plenty of overlap. First, I dragged and dropped them from ACDSee Pro3; then I used file/new/open within ICE. The photos are all JPG.

Panorama Maker was able to use these files and create a pano without error.

How do I get a straight horizon?

I like to shoot the occasional panorama but usually the mood strikes me when the tripod is at home so I shoot handheld. With 2 or 3 pic panoramas that tend to go well but when I use more shots I always end up with a slight curve to my horizons.

Any tips on how to correct this or to prevent this? (Apart from forking out several hunderd euros for a pano head)

ICE Limitations and Recommendations

First off I want to say thank you offering this software because it really is impressive but I do have some recommendations based on my unique situation.

I know that you state that there are no ICE limitations but in fact I have run across one. I cannot import more than 1407 images (3.6 GB) at any one time into the program. It won't even attempt to stitch any more imagery than that and it throws an error stating it can't find an image.

I am using imagery that is collected VIA aerial photography and I am looking for some software that will be able to stitch up to 25,000 images together.

Recommendations:

1. I believe this software would be much more useful if you were able to use geo-tagged imagery. This would allow ICE to preposition and get it close to where it needs to go in the end mosaic which would result in a much faster processing time. I am currently using GEO-TIFFs.

2. It would be extremely helpful if you could use ice to Ortho-Rectify imagery within the software. I am creating mosaics using your software that are in the range of 1000 mega pixels. The problem is that I cannot export the imagery due to TIFF limitations in one file to throw into a GIS suite to do the ortho-rectification.

3. Another option that would be nice is to have a developers toolbox that can use the ICE stitching algorithms so you can customize the solution to your specific need.

Just my thoughts. I realize this is some free software right now and it is still being developed but I think you are close to having some extremely unique software.

No MultiCore Support... ICE Sucks More w/Every New CPU Generation

What a huge disappointment; I've a number of new Core i7 laptops running Win7 64bit, but I think ICE may actually be slower on a Quad Core i7 than last year’s simple Dual Core. I'm sitting here looking at the 8 CPUs in Task Manager (4 Cores * 2 HyperThreads/Core) while ICE is composing, but only 1 CPU is maxed while the other 7 are virtually 100% Idle.

The industry has been moving performance to MultiThreading for many years now, instead of the defunct megahertz-race, desktops even went Quad Core about a year before laptops. One would hope that MS would lead by example, particularly their Research division, but it appears ICE gets slower as the CPU gets faster. Where is MS Research in regards to MultiThreading?

FYI, the stitching function in Live Photo Gallery has equally been gimped to a single-thread.

(I'm a noob at this program, so please cut me some slack :P)

When I attempted at uploading a self-photo in order to increase its size, instead of the image popping up, an error message popped up that read: "Microsoft was unable to stitch together any of the given source images.

Unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Can anyone tell me why this is? Also, how do I open a picture solely for the purpose of increasing its size?

Using ICE for UAV aerial photo stitching

Hi, I ran a snall company in Malaysia www.geosense.info that is using UAV for limited aerial photo for mapping and town planning. For quite sometime we have been testing Microsoft ICE for aerial image stitching, it is faster compare with PT GUI but unfortunately there is no manual adjustment. Even tho ICE gives good overall view of the aerial area covered by our UAV but we find that there is also many point where the joint between images ran out or not match perfectly, if you browse sample of above link especially along the road. How ICE can solve this problem to become a perfect stitching tools for large aerial photo.

Also please advice how to work with Microsoft in hosting aerial photo like virtual earth etc. Thanks.

Manual Stitch

I have 15 photos to be stitched. ICE cannot stitch them all together, however, I am able to make them to 3 groups. I can see clearly the overlapping images, but ICE just cannot do that automatically. Is there any way I can MANUALLY stiitch images together using ICE? Thanks for any help.

This one was taken on a tripod using a Nikon D300. 15 Images.

and this using a compact Panasonic DMC-FT1 camera hand held, but using the Panorama help function. 7 Images.

I've downloaded ICE and I'm satisfied from its final created panorama(in comparision with ArcSoft). But I have some questions:

1.What is Camera Motion? Is it better to select Automatic Camera Motion or manually selection is better?

2.What is the best selection for Scale for email? and print?

3.Which is better in the final created panorama from ICE or AutoDesk Stitcher?

4.Has ICE a complete file for Help? AutoDesk Stitcher has an excellent user guide, but ICE desn't have !

ICE stitches an image differently depending on whether Rotating Motion is chosen automatically or manually

Here's something that surprised me, but which is quite repeatable.

I dropped 3 images onto ICE and it chose to compose them as Rotating Motion, which produced an image 109.2H, 69V extent. I then tried Planar 1 setting, then I set Rotating Motion. This time I got an image 116.3H, 68.2V with quite a different appearance. The first has a bowed horizon, the second is flat.

At 37.5% scale, the first is 3.76 megapixels, and the second is 4.82 megapixels.

I get the same result if I reload the pictures and follow that sequence. It also happens with other image sets.

Hotspots to "connect" Panoramas

What I want to do is putting something like a red dot into a hd view-panorama as a link to an other hd view-panorama.

Have you created a panorama with ICE? Post a link here and show your masterpiece to the world. Remember, not everyone has a super fast broadband connection, and over time this thread can get bogged down with slow loading huge images, so let's create thumbnails, and link those to your off site panorama. ICE even creates the thumbnail for you, and there are MANY free image hosts.

First, create your panorama using ICE.
Check the box under 'Export' labeled 'Create JPEG Thumbnail'
Set the size of the thumbnail to '200', the default 100 is too small IMHO
Export your panorama and thumbnail
Insert your thumbnail into your message using the green tree icon here in the compose message window
Click the inserted thumbnail to select it, then click the chain icon here in the compose window, not the broken chain icon.
Fill in the blanks, and you are set!

Problem with the Panorama perspective preview

I imported 16 images, all of which stiched together and prevewed well in the crop screen. The "Center and curvature" screen again presented well but I needed to change the projection to "Perspective". Again first impressions were good. The image could be scrolled horizontally and vertically presenting the image with the correct perspective. BUT, because I was standing very close to the subject (The end of a building ! ), most of the image is beyond the four white squares layed over the image. Now my problem - Clicking the APPLY "center and curvature" button returns the image to the original projection (ie not the new Perspective projection). There does not seem to be any way I can zoom out from the new perspective image to ensure all the image is contained within the 4 white squares. So I have two problems 1. My new Perspective projection does not "Stick" when I press "Apply" and 2. I cannot zoom out to be able to view my entire image. Help.

It would be nice if you read the rotation info from JPEGs, saves losslessly rotating a bunch of files (only about 5 clicks in Irfanview, but there's still the wait for it to screw up the first time).

BTW I usually use Panorama Factory and while that offers lots more options I'd like to say I'm impressed with ICE's stitching and have been mentioning it to people...

ICE exports a different image to what is shown on screen

I stitched together 5 pictures which show my dog standing in a body of water. It's a planar motion 1 stitch.

When I export the result the image I get miraculously excludes my dog from the picture. It's a pretty bizarre effect because the pictures seem to be the same in every other way.
