When I try to start SongSmith, I get the following error message:
Audio initialization failed (reason: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt).
This error prevents Songsmith from running.
How can I troubleshoot this?
Sorry Songsmith isn't running smoothly for you...
This sounds like a problem talking to your sound card driver... can you let us know whether you have a sound card installed on your computer, and if so, what type of sound card? Are you using a USB sound device, a built-in laptop microphone, etc.?
Any sound device should work with Songsmith, but I haven't seen this error before so I'd like to get as much information as possible to help us figure this out.
Also, what version of Windows are you using?
If this doesn't take us to a solution quickly, I'll contact you offline with additional debugging steps.
Thanks!

I've got a laptop with a built-in Crystal Audio sound card, according to the Device Manager. I'm using a headset that plugs in using standard headphone/mic jacks.
I'm taking this offline with the poster and will let everyone know if we find a solution here. Guilt, you should have received an e-mail from me; please contact me directly if you haven't.
Thanks, and sorry Songsmith isn't working for you... let's get you up and Songsmith'ing.
I keep getting the same error, too.
I'm using an Acer Travelmate 8200 laptop, with Intel Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM, Realtek integrated audio (I'd have to dig more to figure out exactly which chipset.) I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3.
Note, even with this error, I'm able to record, it's just that Songsmith doesn't play any band sounds back, it will only play the recorded voice track.
Sometimes, when I start the software, I'll get a few seconds of music before it cuts out and either crashes or gives me the error above.
Is there any further info I can give you that could help? Any tools you'd like me to run to help you troubleshoot (such as debug versions, maybe?)
