ALOT of people are going to take it seriously and eventually put their work on iTunes, and even sadder is that they WILL get a few downloads most likely by 10yr olds and younger IF ANYTHING.

In the hands of someone with talent, three tubes of acrylic paints and a brush can produce great art. In the hands of someone with little training but lots of interest, they mostly produce a terrible mess and nothing much worth looking at. Should paint and brush manufacturers require proof of art training before selling their products?

Better yet. 20 years ago, a person who took a photo pretty much had to put up with red-eye, or color skew due to lighting, or the accidental inclusion of something weird in the background. Professionals with lots of money and lots of equipment could retouch small errors like that, and routinely did so. Fast forward to today, where the number of people capable of producing beautiful photographs has increased a thousandfold through better tools (Photoshop and other photo editing tools). Take a look at Flickr. Yes, there's a lot of "snapshots" there. But there's a staggering variety of really beautiful photographs produced by talented amateurs and semi-pros, images directly enabled by their tools multiplying their own developed-over-time talents.

Tools don't make art. Artists make art. Simpler tools let people start climbing the ladder towards artistry much earlier; they reduce the barrier to entry. Songsmith doesn't pretend to be Finale, doesn't claim to be a digital audio workstation, doesn't even claim to be Band-In-A-Box. It's an audio sketchbook. No one is interested in the sketches of the vast majority of painters, only the great artists. No painter tries to sell his or her preliminary sketches or studies. They're steps along the way to something greater.

While there may be some truth that the "masses" aren't going to make great quality music, it's supposed to be FUN!!

Plus, as a songwriter, I see INSTANT use for this software.  No more trying to figure out what chord to use (if it works, I haven't tried it yet) or how to "change things up a bit".

I do not agree...

I intend to use this program to help my daughter and I collaborate.  She is an excellent songwriter but hampered by the learning curve presented by SONAR.  She completely understands how to use Songsmith.  Exporting her Songsmith ideas in Wave and MIDI to SONAR will allow me to more accurately interpret her compositions, arrange and produce her music.  That's it in a nutshell...

Obviously the software is not suppose to replace a full featured professional DAW.

Many sometimes prefer listening to a dry analog recording done on 8 tracks than the sometimes overproduced messes you can get from a DAW.

Yeah, you're right... If this came from Apple, it would be genius. Since it is from Microsoft, it is a joke. I guess the joke is on you... Cool

And what is wrong with that?

I've heard a lot of bad songs in my days, some written with the help of computer songwriting programs, some written with a guitar, some written on piano, and some written on who knows what.

Two kinds of music will find a big audience

  1. Good music
  2. Heavily promoted music (good, bad or mediocre)

Since the 10 year old kid (or anybody else) who wants to put his/her tune on iTunes doesn't have the funds for big promotion, it isn't going to make a dent in the big scheme of things.

When I started playing with music computers and Band-in-a-Box way back in the Atari ST days, other musicians were telling me, "You're going to put musicians out of work with that thing." I replied, "I'm putting a musician to work with it. Me."

Now many of those same musicians are my customers, buying software from me to use on their computers.

A tool is a tool, and this like any tool can be used or abused. I'm sure there will be some who produce pure garbage with it, and others who use the tool to write good songs. Tools are like that. I have a skilsaw but am a very lousy carpenter. I have musical tools (sax, wind synth, guitar, computers, etc.) and am a very good musician.
