The reason for Autocollage price ?

    Hi,

Sorry for the title I understand that I look like a troll, but I want to understand why do you made the choice not to bundle AutoCollage with Live photo gallery and chosed to sell it.

I understand that MSR work does cost much money but, some other "Research" products are today offered free like the "Panorama Stitching" in the live photo gallery, HD View or even DeepZoom.

I don't want to be rude, but I want to understand a little bit about how MSR works and why some programs are bundled in a MS product and some are sold ?

Autocollage could have been bundled the same way the Panorama stitching !

Don't get me wrong I like the product and I would probably buy it if it could be used as a command line for WHS, but it feel so strange to me Confused

    Regards.

    Atomusk,

The integration of a technology into an existing product usually takes even more time than developing an independent application to showcase that technology.
That also requires the schedules for both teams to be aligned.
Our schedule didn’t align with WLPG (Windows Live Photo Gallery) for this release of the AutoCollage technology.

Microsoft Research has a great number of researchers, all of them investigating several ideas, and publishing great papers and technical reports in several different areas.
For you to have a sample of the enormous gamut of publications from Microsoft Research, take a look at http://research.microsoft.com/research/pubs.
Some of the results that include software components are released for non-commercial use through the Microsoft Research Downloads site, at http://research.microsoft.com/research/downloads.
Meanwhile, other results are already being integrated in company products, or are at different stages of productization.

Our small incubation team decided to develop an independent application to showcase the AutoCollage technology.
Such productization is not really a research effort, but an engineering effort that we decided to charge for.
The revenues we generate from MSR technologies will provide the resources needed to bring more MSR technologies to market faster.
