sorry about the spelling errors chuck
hello all,
well, here I am, doing a new install - but 1.5 years later than the last post to this thread - and I'm getting the same error message as the others did so long ago: "...requires 3d graphics and DirectX."
I was surprised to find no other information on how to fix this - and the link above to DirectX installs the SUPPORT software for directx
- aka the directX SDK! .. why in the world, (or in the universe) would I need to install the SDK for an end application? (not to mention that its 54 megs!)
The FIRST instalI run today even asked me to Agree to installing Directx - so didn't the installer package the correct version??
" Microsoft WorldWide Telescope Autumnal Aphelion Beta " downloaded and installed 27SEPT09.
I am not using VGA on my Nvidia Geforce2 card - yes it's an older card, but it DOES 3d and Directx fine. (XP, SP3) - I have all flavors of .NET installed - up to 3.5.
What is going on here?? I am Windows systems programmer of many years and find this irritating because (IMO) someone is being sloppy with the installer scripts. Certainly, I can understand having problems with this on Vista - but not on XP, and not after 1.5 years!
Please Advise.
thanks,
Howard
The simple answer is your system is too old to run WWT. No you don't need the DirectX SDK, but you do need a card and system that will run DirectX version 9.0c - WWT will not run on any earlier version.
Thanks Peter,
sorry for the grumpy post ! --- spent a good hour downloading stuff to try to make it work to no avail.
Well, I can do directx 9 on that card, so I'm not sure what the problem is - unless it has to be fully dx9 compliant.
( If full compliance with dx9 is a requirement, I didn't see that in any of the install related info I found, nor in posts here ... or it's buried. )
Might be good to let folks know this in the "windows system requirements" link under the install button
- perhaps the install script could probe the card first to see if it will work *before* all the other stuff?
BTW, it works great on another machine - but this one's got a dual monitor and a killer card.
thanks for the nice work!
