    Re: program will not launch

    Chuck Needham:

WWT needs .NET 2.0 and DirectX 9.0c http://community.research.microsoft.com/forums/t/1085.aspx (yes you can have multiple versions on the same computer Smile)

YES!  Got it working!  However, I'm not sure the statement above is correct regarding .NET 2.0 and Vista.  To get WWT working, all I did for my Vista setup was I went back to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Research\Microsoft WorldWide Telescope folder and manually ran DXSETUP.EXE, which you're right, seemingly installed 9.0c even though I already had version 10 installed with Vista...and then vuala, WWT fires up fine now.

In the interest of pursuing the same route regarding installing .NET 2.0 on my Vista PC (even though I already have .NET 3.5 installed), I visited the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displayLang=en#

...but when I tried to install I received the following error message:
    Error: Product already installed
This product is already installed as part of the operating system.

What's more interesting to me, is the fact that if I go to Vista's control panel, and choose "UNINSTALL A PROGRAM" (to see what's installed), I have both .NET 1.1 listed as well as .NET 3.5 -- but there's no mention at all of .NET 2.0.

Anyhow...thanks for the tip Chuck!  I'm good to go for now!

First, I want to say that I had the Direct3D error, and I finally got it working.  The problem for me (I'm running Vista, but it shouldn't matter) was that the debug version of Direct3D9 was enabled.  To see if it's enabled for you, you need to look at this key in the registry

     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Direct3D\

and make sure that LoadDebugRuntime is set to 0 or doesn't exist.

Also, I'd like to mention that while XP SP2 includes Direct3D 9.0c and that Vista includes Direct3D 9.0c and Direct3D 10.0
(SP1 also includes Direct3D 10.1), you still need to install the DirectX setup, since it installs D3DX9 libraries (which are released a few times a year (current version is d3dx9_37.dll)) and it looks like WWT uses d3dx9.

     Hope this helps!

Reinstalled DirectX, checked registry for debug setting (didn't exist)... tried loading, still getting crash on startup.

I have updated the first threads in most of the stickies so please go through them again.

Also make sure to download the latest drivers for your video card from your manufacturer.

Also make sure to download the latest drivers for your video card from your manufacturer.

None of the stickies deal with this issue.

In hopes that I don't have to type this again.

    I have...

    • Dell Inspiron 9100 (Pentium 4 2.8GHz)
    • 2GB RAM  (System Managed Page File: 799MB Used, 2215MB Available)
    • 256MB (Dedicated, Not System Shared) ATI Mobility Radeon 9800,    Driver Version: 8.360.0.0 (ATI Technologies Latest Version)
    • 100GB Seagate Technology Momentus 7200.1 Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive
    • .NET Framework(s) 1.0.3705,   1.1.4322,   2.0.50727,   3.0,   3.5
    • DirectX Version(s) 9.0c,   10   (DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration, AGP Texture Acceleration ENABLED)
    • Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (32-bit)  (6.0, Build 6001)

    Things I have tried...

    • DirectX 9.0c was reinstalled
    • Direct3D Acceleration is enabled
    • WorldWide Telescope was uninstalled and reinstalled.
    • Registry was checked to ensure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Direct3D\LoadDebugRuntime key did not exist.

    Re: program will not launch

This is an update. Researching the issue through VMWare reveals that the 3D Graphics emulation is currently experimental, and does not implement shading (I don't know if WWT uses that). More to the point, this implementation only works with XP SP2 right now, and not SP3. Unfortunately, in my zeal to be up to date, I had already gone to SP3 on my system, so 3D Graphics is not available, and WWT doesn't launch for a clear reason. I haven't built another SP2 virtual machine to see if WWT will work there yet. I will report after I have a chance to do this.

    Hi edgett,

One last thing before I escalate your issue... try reinstalling your .NET Framwork 2.0

This is not possible in Vista.  If you attempt to install it you will get a message that says "This product is already installed as part of the operating system."

    Hi edgett,

We have some new things to try:

    • Make sure you have the latest Windows updates
    • Make sure your font size is set to something other than 120dpi

If these do not work please send me a private message by clicking on my name and I will contact you outside of these forums. :-)

I have .NET 2.0 and DirectX 9.0c and 3D Graphics. I even ran a test to make sure that the latter was working.  The test was successful. I also have Windows XP. I read in the thread that what I have should allow me to run this program but I get the message "You need 3d Graphics and DirectX installed to run this application" each time I attempt to launch it.

When I start the program there apears message about error of Microsoft .NET Framemework: "System.IndexOutOfRangeException" (all massegae is in Russian and I can't trunslate it in English), then program hangs at all and I can only kill it by Task Maneger.

    OS - Vista Ultimate SP1 32 bit

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz

    Ram - 4Gb

On the same Comp (anothe OS Vista Ultimate SP1 on anothe hard disc) this program run without problem.

Exuse me for my bad English!
