I can't help but feel hugely disappointed by this release. First of all - how on earth is anyone supposed to gauge whether or not they want to pay for the full program based on what seems like a five minute trial?

Especially as the "tutorial" is about one of the worst tutorials I've ever seen. You *think* you're going to get a play by play description of how to move him (which would generally be what you'd expect a tutorial to work like), but.....nope.

After the initial "move me to the castle" message, you're left with no hints anywhere. You end up fumbling round in the radial menus trying to find a castle.

Confusion rules again when you try to work out how to get the character to the castle - it looks like you're supposed to put the entirety of "when i see + castle" & "make me move + to castle" in the top line (am I supposed to mess with the ones below? I've no idea, because the program offers no tips on this that I can see). However, after endless attempts to put the "move to castle" part in the top line, you eventually only get him moving when you put the second half in the lower one.

Did I do it right? Should I have left the second line as is? No idea, but there's absolutely no hints or clues forthcoming from the program so who knows?

Then you do it, and you don't get a second "tutorial" - the program just stops, and asks you if you want to try it again or start afresh. So you start afresh with a clean slate and.....time limit expired, exit the program.

That's an absolutely dreadful introduction to Kodu.

@Paperghost - It sounds like a program that 5 yr olds use might be above your learning curve.

All XNA titles have that short time trial.  Its a trial...its not supposed to satisfy you completely.

@Paperghost, I had a quick 10 minute go, managed to get the little dude moving to the castle, but then realised the camera position was stationery, so I had a further fiddle and managed to make the camera follow the item.

I can see this requiring an absolutely huge wiki.

There is more than one tutorial. I think you have to click start, then load a new world and it will show all the tutorials, sample games, ect...

Sturm88 "@Paperghost - It sounds like a program that 5 yr olds use might be above your learning curve."

And when the first thing you have to fall back on are random ad hominem attacks, your points are never going to make it past the starting gate. I've worked with everything from SEUCK (used at a comparably young base age to this with no problems, amazingly enough) to Hammer, and if someone who can use those happily is a little perplexed by the total lack of information in the very first thing you see, then there is a problem there that needs looking at.

Perhaps, I don't know, showing the user the tutorial pages right off the bat instead of a terribly implemented "move this guy to a castle, although we won't give any information on how to do this" routine might be more useful?

"All XNA titles have that short time trial.  Its a trial...its not supposed to satisfy you completely."

Amazingly enough, this isn't something that joins the usual ranks of "short but pointless shooter with two buttons for firing" that make up the bulk of XNA games. This is supposedly quite a bit more in depth and complex, and should *never* have been in XNA. At the very least, it needs a longer trial - currently, there are a lot of people trying this, wondering where the basic "how to" information is then abandoning it when the ludicrous time limit kicks in. It's a creation tool, not a 2 minute wonder of a shooter and should be accorded enough time to make a purchasing decision accordingly.

As it stands, five minutes of being puzzled by the laughable "introduction" simply convinced me not to bother purchasing. Still think the short trial is helping them sell copies? Or hindering additional sales?

@Paperghost

This is a community game. While I'm sure that receiving profits from the sales of a game is a nice bonus, I'm sure that Matt and the crew that worked on Kodu made the game for us, the people who have been on the edge of their seat waiting for Kodu since they heard about it, or the people who stayed up all last night, checking the games channel, pressing F5 on twitter and other social networking sites.  The point of community games isn't about making sales, it's about people making fun things for each other, and sharing your ideas. Some of us have been following this game's progress religiously, and we know the basics of how this game works, and honestly I've got to say Sturm88 is right, this game was made so that a 7 year old could figure out. I'm a 15 year old whose programming experience goes all the way to learning the if-elif structure, and this looks easy. That's because it is. It is not meant to be hard, it is meant for making games. I personally can't wait to see games that people come up with.

Dear Kodu team,

This is the best ever. Thank you so much. I don't have any idea what initiative and skills were required to open up a forgiving and casual programming language for gaming environments, but I sure am grateful that you have them. I downloaded it last night, played with it this morning and I feel a kind of satisfaction that sends "eureaka"'s and moments of illumination out of my psyche like blips without the once modifier. This is the best.

Thank you Thank you.

Even if this program doesn't extrapolate new game mechanics across the industry through it's ease of use and suggestive menus(which it will), It will still be the manifesto.

Congratulations on making something that is so desirable for so many people with a variety of motivations.

Now we can talk about t-shirts.

"The point of community games isn't about making sales, it's about people making fun things for each other, and sharing your ideas."

If there's no sale, there's no sharing ideas or making *anything* though, is there? If the introduction to the package wasn't as bizarre as it was (and instead did something as basic as start with the title screen), then I'd be more inclined to buy. As it is, poor initial response = a % of people who won't want to take the chance. With the hideously short demo time, the sale is *everything* here and what's presented in those handful of minutes doesn't do the program justice.

waiting4kodu: "i think your negitivity is unwanted here and the universe that is kodu will be far better with out your superiority complex mucking it up. thank you and good day sir! (and if 5 dollars is too much for a game you should consider selling your xbox)"

You already lost me with your dreadful meme reference, but the criticism is offered to the creators for them to consider, not for you to cry over. As for money, only a fool would throw money at something he wasn't sure about based on an initially poor first impression. I'm not, so I won't be. How much - or little - money they're asking for is irrelevant.

Hobalong3: "Ya man, if you're going to be negative about Kodu, find somewhere else to do it. Most of the people who have posted comments have been following it forever."

or I could, you know, offer some reasons to the dev team as to why a number of people likely won't purchase this, when they otherwise would have done, myself included. If you think shielding the dev team from criticisms such as those is a good thing, then you're not helping them at all.

# July 1, 2009 11:24 AM

@paperghost im sorry i lost you with my "meme reference" but you should know that they no controll over the time trial... that is a different branch of microsoft. for a team as small as this i think they did great. im sorry your experience was not good. critisism is good, its what pushes things to greatness... or death lol. i hope you i did not lose you this time.

Sir SpankalotUK said:

@paperghost, I think your missing the point, this is introduced into classrooms, where the teacher will explain as best as possible the workings of Kodu, and perhaps even give them sheets with the solution on, so that the children learn by doing. While I will admit that the tutorial does have a certain "in at the deep end approach", I kinda liked it.

Perhaps the community or the developers could get some sheets together to walk people through the tutorial and include some extra bits at the end for people to practise with.

# July 1, 2009 11:57 AM

mattmac said:

paperghost: yeah, we hate the time limitation on the trials but there's nothing we can do about it. I actually would have preferred to not have a trial at all because there is no way to teach a programming language in 5 minutes.

That said, you only have to change two tiles to solve the simple tutorial.

We were very divided on what kind of tutorial to start people in - complex world or simple one. We tried a few out and most people preferred this one, although some were annoyed by the locked camera.

You can actually load up any level while in trial mode; I'm sure there's something else in thre you'd enjoy more.

Thanks for the response. I wish you well with the project - if I didn't want it to win out, I wouldn't have gone looking for the official blog to let you know some of the issues people are having with it.

I just thought you should know reception to the way the program initially fires up has thrown quite a few people. Probably not a huge amount; but of course nobody thrown is better than a lot or even a few!
